Fall Cleanup in Kansas: Where to Take Old Furniture, Yard Waste & Household Junk
Planning a fall cleanup in Wichita? Learn where to take old furniture, yard waste, household junk, hazardous materials, and renovation debris—and when renting a dumpster may be the easier option.

Fall cleanup sounds simple—until you see just how much stuff has accumulated.

Old furniture. Garage clutter. Bags of leaves. Tree branches. Broken appliances. Remodeling leftovers. And the items you have been meaning to get rid of for months. The challenge is not always the cleanup itself. It is figuring out where everything should go once it is out of the house.

If you are planning a fall cleanup in Wichita or the surrounding Sedgwick County area, here is a practical guide to help you sort the mess, find the right disposal option, and decide when a dumpster may make more sense.

.

First, Sort Your Cleanup by Type

Before loading the truck or ordering a dumpster, separate everything into a few basic categories:

● Reusable items: Furniture, household goods, clothing, and other items that are still usable may be better donated or reused.

● Yard waste: Leaves, grass clippings, branches, and untreated wood can often be handled through composting or yard-waste options.

● Bulky household items: Couches, furniture, carpet, countertops, and certain large appliances may require a special disposal option.

● Household hazardous waste: Paint, gasoline, antifreeze, pesticides, batteries, aerosols, cleaners, and similar chemicals should not simply be thrown in with regular household junk.

● Renovation and construction debris: Drywall, roofing materials, wood, concrete, brick, flooring, and other project debris may belong at a construction and demolition facility.

Sorting first can save you from making multiple trips—or discovering at the disposal site that something cannot be accepted.

Where Should It Go?

Old furniture and bulky items: Sedgwick County is currently offering free bulky-waste vouchers to county residents through October 30, 2026, while supplies last. Bulky-waste vouchers cover up to 1,000 pounds of qualifying material, including items such as furniture, carpet, countertops, tree limbs, and large appliances.

Leaves, grass and yard waste: Sedgwick County recommends options such as mulch mowing and composting for leaves and grass clippings. Brooks Landfill also accepts leaves, grass clippings, and untreated wood for a fee based on weight.

Household hazardous waste: Paint, batteries, gasoline, antifreeze, pesticides, herbicides, household cleaners, fluorescent bulbs, and other household chemicals can be taken to the Sedgwick County Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 801 Stillwell in Wichita. Residential disposal is free, and the facility lists current drop-off hours Tuesday through Saturday.

Renovation and construction debris: Sedgwick County has two construction and demolition landfills. They accept many materials associated with remodeling and cleanup, including furniture, certain appliances, vegetation from storm cleanup, roofing materials, wood, drywall, concrete, brick, soil, and other qualifying materials. Hazardous materials, tires, garbage, and certain containers are not accepted.

Because hours, fees, accepted materials, and special programs can change, check the facility’s current requirements before loading up and heading out.

When Does Renting a Dumpster Make More Sense?

Sometimes the biggest problem is not where the waste can go—it is how much waste you have. A dumpster can be a practical option when you are tackling a larger cleanup over several days instead of trying to haul everything away one truckload at a time.

For example, a dumpster may make sense for:
● A whole-house cleanout when multiple rooms need to be cleared.
● A garage or basement cleanout when years of accumulated household items need to go at once.
● A home renovation when debris is being generated throughout the project.
● A roofing or construction project where bulky materials quickly pile up.
● A large seasonal cleanup involving furniture, household junk, yard debris, or other permitted materials.

Instead of repeatedly loading a vehicle, driving to a disposal facility, unloading, and coming back for another load, you can have the container delivered to your property, load it as you work, and have it hauled away when you are finished.

That is the approach behind Dumpster Cow’s simple “You Load It. We Haul It.” service. Dumpster Cow is locally owned in Wichita and offers residential and commercial dumpster rentals, including roll-offs and a dumpster trailer. The company provides free quotes to help customers choose an option based on their project.

A Simple Fall Cleanup Plan

You do not have to tackle everything in one weekend. Start by walking through the house, garage, yard, or project area and make one pile for each type of material. Next, identify anything that can be donated, recycled, composted, or taken to a specialized facility. Then look at what remains.

If you only have a few bulky items, a county voucher or direct disposal option may be enough. If you have several truckloads of mixed cleanup material, renting a dumpster can save time and keep the project moving without repeated hauling trips. The key is choosing the disposal method before everything is loaded.

Ready to Clear Out the Fall Clutter?

A fall cleanup can quickly turn into a bigger project when furniture, yard debris, household junk, and renovation materials start piling up. Sort first. Check local disposal rules. Then choose the option that fits the amount and type of waste you actually have. For larger cleanouts and projects in the Wichita area, a dumpster can make the process much simpler.
